Box and Panel List
The list below shows all of the boxes with corresponding back panels that were part of the 1962 Post cereal promotion. The order of the cards on each panel runs from the top left down to the bottom, up to the top right and then down to the bottom right. The brand and size are each listed with a shorthand notation that will be used throughout this website.
Three cereals' back panels were duplicated on other boxes: Alpha-Bits by Crispy Critters on both 8 and 13 oz. sizes, Grape Nuts Flakes 12 oz. by Top 3 10 oz. and Post Toasties 12 oz. boxes with a regular top flap by Post Toasties 12 oz. test boxes with a "Flip-Out Spout."
Post's official card list from 1962 shows cards on four Oat Flakes 15 oz. panels that should be the same as their 10 oz. Sugar Coated Corn Flakes counterparts. Only one Oat Flakes 15 oz. panel is known in the hobby. That panel is number 153, with Bill Koman, Ollie Matson, Don Joyce, Fred Hageman, Boyd Dowler, Roosevelt Grier and Bob Gain. This lone panel is most likely a proof panel that was never distributed as it has no adhesive on the back. The story behind this panel is that it was once part of a large group of panels owned by a former Post cereal employee. Identification of Oat Flakes 15 oz. cards has been a source of collector discussion as there are two versions of cards for Sugar Coated Corn Flakes panels 15 (Whittenton) and 54 (McCord). There were two production runs of these panels as SCCF10 boxes rather than the cards originating on Oat Flakes 15 oz. boxes. Only individual cards from SCCF10 panels have been identified and other than the aforementioned OF15 test panel, there are no others known to exist. While it may be impossible to prove that no Oat Flakes 15 oz. boxes with football cards were ever produced, the probability that they were is extremely low.
Alpha-Bits ¾ oz. boxes were part of both Post Tens and Treat Paks. Post Tens was ten individual single serving boxes under cellophane and Treat Pak was a variety six pack. The Alpha-Bits ¾ oz. box in the Post Tens pack was the only Alpha-Bits single box in that group, but there were two of the small Alpha-Bits boxes placed in Treat Paks. Fronts of Post Tens and Treat Pak Alpha-Bits ¾ oz. cards are cropped exactly the same, but some of the cards' fronts—especially Hornung, Webster and Jurgensen—appear to have two distinct photos. There is also a difference in some of the adhesive patterns on the backs of the cards. However, research done by veteran collectors Bill Rothney and Dave Worley in February 2018 has provided evidence that any differences in the fronts or backs of the Alpha-Bits ¾ oz. cards is due to separate production runs rather than differing rotogravure plates. After the boxes were filled with Alpha-Bits, they were stored and later placed indiscriminately in either Post Tens or Treat Paks.
Top 3 10 oz. boxes duplicated Grape Nuts Flakes 12 oz. boxes. Top 3 was a short lived Post cereal that was produced only from 1961-63. It was "A mixture of Corn Flakes, Wheat Flakes, and Crisp Rice." Determining if a card is a Grape Nuts Flakes 12 oz. card or a Top 3 10 oz. card is reasonably difficult. A thorough discussion of identification methods can be found under the Master Set tab.
Differentiating Crispy Critters cards from Alpha-Bits cards is done by comparing the numbered football in the upper right corner of the card. Footballs on Alpha-Bits cards are light yellow, while Crispy Critters' footballs are close to the color maize. The color differences are most easily identifiable in sunlight or under incandescent lights. Modern lighting has a tendency to wash out the football on the Crispy Critters cards making it appear light yellow. Crispy Critters and Alpha-Bits cards generally have differing photo color levels. Cards on Post Toasties 12 oz. top flap and flip-out spout boxes are most easily identified by the shade of the backside cardboard, but also display slightly different color characteristics. Again, the Master Set tab is the place to go for this information.
